The Dawes Vantage – A Go-anywhere, Do-anything Touring Bike
If cycle touring is what interests you, the Dawes Vantage is a bike that should get your attention. If you want a bike that will do anything – extended trips, quick commuting to work or the shops, or even just for getting out and about for a few hours on a Sunday, the Vantage could be your ideal.
What is it about the Vantage that’s so special?
First of all, Dawes have chosen to build it around an aluminium frame. Most tourers have steel frames – steel will stand up to any amount of hard treatment. However, modern manufacturing techniques mean that aluminium frames can be built cheaper. For the majority of users, the strength and durability issue will not be a problem. It’s only when carrying heavy loads over severe terrain that steel would be the preferred option. The 2011 Vantage is available in four sizes, and is finished in a rich red.
The choice of gear components is similarly practical. Basic but quality Shimano parts have been combined, using both MTB and road bike options, to give 24 gears. The Acera rear mech from the MTB range will put up with most conditions. Both front mech and the shifters are road-bike components, so you will feel comfortable operating the gears from the drop handlebars. The smallest chainring may be a little large at 28t, but it’s only on the worst terrain with the heaviest loads that this would be a problem.
The choice of brakes is always important on a tourer – and Dawes have chosen simple rugged cantilevers. Easy to maintain and adjust. As important on a tourer are the mudguards and carrier rack. A pannier could also be mounted on the front fork if you want. The Dawes touring saddle is well padded for spending hours on the bike.
It’s actually hard to imagine that you could get this sort of versatility in a bike for this sort of outlay. It’s fair to say that it won’t feel as fast as a carbon road machine, and it won’t take to the mud and gravel like a mountain bike – but that’s not what it’s built for, but if you want just one bike to do almost anything for you, the Dawes Vantage takes a lot of beating.
